  • Doctor Mary-Jo Shanahan, OD

    Dr. Mary-Jo Shanahan, OD

    Dr. Shanahan knew she wanted to be an Optometrist since 3rd grade when she was prescribed her first pair of glasses. She is now proud to be serving patients at the oldest continuing Optometry practice in Waterloo region (established 1899) and is devoted to providing excellent patient care.

    Mary-Jo graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Doctor of Optometry Degree (Honours) in 2008 and practiced in Toronto for several years before returning to her hometown of Kitchener. Mary-Jo is proficient in Spanish and has travelled to Ecuador with an eyecare team to provide services in an impoverished region.

    Dr. Shanahan welcomes open and direct communications with patients (text, email, phone). In her spare time she enjoys fitness, spending time with her husband and two children, scrapbooking and karaoke.

  • Doctor Joseph Heslip

    Dr. Joseph Heslip, OD

    Dr. Heslip graduated with honours in 1996 from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Optometry degrees. During his externship at the Eye Institute in New Port Richey, Florida, Dr. Heslip gained invaluable clinical experience in the treatment of ocular disease. He practiced as an associate in both Simcoe and Hamilton before joining Dr. MacKenzie in Kitchener. He is the past resident Optometrist for Trinity Village Care Centre and is past president of the Waterloo-Wellington and District Optometric Association.

    A native of Kitchener, Dr. Heslip enjoys many outdoor activities with his family. Skiing and swimming are his favourites although he is happily consumed by life as a hockey parent (Let’s GO Kitchener Rangers!!). A little known tidbit: Dr. Heslip attended Humber College to study composition, arranging and performance as a bassist.

  • Dr. Sarah Hanmer, OD

    Dr. Hanmer graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry in 2017 with clinical honours. She is a member of the Canadian Association of Optometrists and the Ontario Association of Optometrists. As part of her optometric training, Dr. Hanmer completed clinical externships in Chicago, North Carolina, Wyoming and Boston. Dr. Hanmer started her career in Portland, Maine; and in 2018 she moved back to Ontario, where she continued to practice in Collingwood, Ontario. Family and friends ultimately motivated Dr. Hanmer to move back to her hometown of Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, and she joined our practice in 2023.

    Dr. Hanmer has extensive experience practicing medically focused optometry; and has interests in the management and treatment of ocular diseases, such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and dry eye syndrome. Dr. Hanmer also has a special interest in neurological conditions and pediatric optometry.

    Outside the office, Dr. Hanmer enjoys hiking with her golden retriever, Winonah, and catching up with friends and family in the Kitchener-Waterloo area.
